4th World Reading Day & Reading Culture Series Activities entitled "Sailing in the Sea of Books, Building Dreams at HYIT" opened grandly at the Chutian Square of Meicheng Road campus. HYIT Party Committee Secretary Zhao Bingqi, President Sun Aiwu, Party Committee's Deputy Secretary and Vice President Prof. Wu Jianhua, Standing Committee Members and Vice Presidents Zhu Xiaowen and Wang Dongdong, Standing Committee Member and Publicity Department's Head Prof. Hua Xuecheng and Library Curator Xue Jianming attended the opening ceremony.
Zhao Bingqi announced the opening of the event. Zhao Bingqi, Sun Aiwu, Wu Jianhua, Zhu Xiaowen, Wang Dongdong, Hua Xuecheng and Xue Jianming together kicked off our university's Celebration for the 24th World Reading Day & Reading Culture Series Activities.
In the "book giveaway" part, Zhao Bingqi, Sun Aiwu, Wu Jianhua, Zhu Xiaowen and Wang Dongdong presented commendation certificates and books to the Star Readers of 2018, including teachers Xiong Shouchun and Li Xiaohui, and students Xing Kang, Wang Gege, Song Xiling, Wu Xilong.
Sun Aiwu delivered the opening speech. He pointed out that the development of a person's moral character is closely related to the quantity and quality of reading to a large extent. Reading Chinese classics lays the cultural foundation; reading world-famous masterpieces promotes spiritual cultivation; reading celebrities' biographies make one feel the power of role models; reading natural sciences taps into the source of wisdom; reading Chinese and Western philosophies opens the window of one's soul. A nation's spiritual state depends on the reading level of the whole nation. HYIT has always attached great importance to the construction of university culture. In the revitalization strategy of HYIT, the goal of building a scholarly campus has been put forward; the action plan for building a first-class university culture has been implemented as the spiritual guidance for uniting minds and gathering strength to advance in high spirits. To this end, a number of practical measures have been taken.
Sun Aiwu stressed that reading should not be impetuous or shallow, but should be perseverant. Youth is the golden time in one's life. The foundation of knowledge laid in one's youth influences and even decides one's whole life. Students are in the golden days of their lives, so they must study hard and constantly enhance their abilities, read both the books with words and the books without words, and learn life experience and social knowledge. Only in this way can we live up to our youth. He hoped that the students could walk into the library, get close to books and enjoy the fun of reading, so as to make the campus of HYIT full of the sound of reading and the fragrance of ink.
The Library's curator Xue Jianming introduced the purpose, intention and content of the activities to be carried out on the World Reading Day (April 23).
At the opening ceremony, wonderful performances were presented. The dance "Bamboo Books" was magnificent and poetic. The movements of elegant long sleeves were powerful and breathtaking. The dance retained the elements of the primitive dance, carried forward the fine traditional Chinese culture, embodied the spirit of Chinese culture, and displayed the soul of the Chinese nation. In the "book giveaway" part, leaders presented books to the Star Readers in person, encouraging teachers and students to read more good books. In the book show, models in traditional costumes walked onstage with books in their hands to show the beauty, charm and appeal of books in a creative style. During the oath-taking ceremony, Cai Xiwen, the deputy secretary of HYIT's Communist Youth League Committee, led the teachers and students in the oath as a solemn promise to strengthen their understanding of the purpose of World Reading Day, improve the consciousness of reading, take active actions to promote reading and support the national reading program. The recitation of the poet "Believing in the Future" with music taught people how to live well in the face of adversity, how to encourage themselves and stay true to their commitment to tomorrow with its profound thoughts, beautiful artistic conception and catchy poetic style. The flash mob performance "My Motherland and Me" was affectionately presented by teachers and students to celebrate the seventieth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, inspiring teachers and students' patriotic feelings. The opening ceremony ended successfully as the leaders pushed the control rod together.
More than 700 people attended the opening ceremony, including leaders from the Party and Administration Office, Office of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs Office, International Cooperation and Exchange Office, Labor Union, Communist Youth League Committee, Library, persons in charge from some secondary faculties as well as teacher and student representatives.
It’s understood that the theme of HYIT's World Reading Day series activities this year was "Sailing in the Sea of Books, Building Dreams at HYIT." During the reading festival, there would be more than 10 colorful activities, such as living library, speaking for books, oral English contest, free reading of periodicals, meeting with famous teachers and reading a book together. The holding of the World Reading Day series activities can further create a scholarly campus atmosphere, create a first-class campus culture, inspire teachers and students to remember HYIT's motto: "Reading for the rise of China" and uphold the HYIT Spirit: "Pursue moral excellence and great learning, constantly strive for self-improvement," facilitating the construction of a scholarly campus and supporting the national reading program.
