On the afternoon of September 25, HYIT opening ceremony for 2020 undergraduate, graduate and international students was held in the Students Activity Center of Beijing Road Campus. Party Secretary Zhao Bingqi, President Sun Aiwu, Deputy Party Secretary and Vice President Wu Jianhua, Vice Presidents Lu Weiqun and Zhang Youdong, Secretary of the Discipline Committee Wei Hongqing and other HYIT leaders attended the opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony, consisting of two sections, “HYIT Impressions” and “Dream Starts at HYIT”, commenced with  the song and dance program “Welcome You to HYIT”. Due to the need for the normalization of epidemic prevention and control, the opening ceremony was held both online and offline.

On behalf of the university, President Sun Aiwu expressed his warm congratulations to the undergraduates, graduate students and overseas students of 2020, and delivered a speech entitled “Bearing the Responsibility of the Times with My Youth”. He pointed out that 2020 was an extraordinary year. In the face of the fierce COVID-19 pandemic, the CPC Central Committee with Chairman Xi Jinping as its core has united and led the Chinese people of all ethnic groups in a fierce war against COVID-19, and achieved great victories at the current stage. In this arduous battle against the pandemic, the institutional advantages of socialism with Chinese characteristics have been fully demonstrated. Currently, the epidemic is still raging around the world. Only China is the safest country and only China has fully resumed its schooling. It’s not easy for us to meet at the HYIT Campus as scheduled and should be cherished all the more.

At the opening ceremony, Sun Aiwu presented his affectionate wishes to the new students:

“First, you should aim high, shoulder great responsibilities, and integrate the individual into our country. ‘To ordain conscience for Heaven and Earth, to secure life and fortune for the people, to carry on lost teachings of ancient sages, and to establish peace for all future generations’ is not only the instruction of our predecessors, but also the responsibility that young people should shoulder. You should always keep a clear mind and realize that there still exist many huge challenges on the road of realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. You should cultivate affection for both your family and our country, integrate our ego into the great self of the motherland and the great self of the times, share the destiny with the times, set up lofty aspirations, and shoulder the great responsibilities of the times.”

“Second, you should attach importance to moral cultivation, tolerance and be open-minded and sincere in interpersonal relations. ‘Man cannot be truly steadfast without virtue, and morality is the foundation of man.’ Youth is a crucial period in the formation of character. University is a place for students to acquire knowledge and improve abilities. It is also a place for students to cultivate their moral qualities and shape their good conduct. You should consciously practice socialist core values and constantly form and improve good personal character. You should maintain the habit of starting from doing the little things well and managing the little things well, learning self-discipline, thrift, gratitude, helping others, humility, and tolerance, and understanding, keeping, cultivating and shaping morality to buckle well the first button of life. You should treat others with a sincere attitude, and accept others with a generous mind.”

“Third, you should learn extensively, practice real skills, and compose your youth song with efforts. You should embrace and live up to the prosperous times. You should not only read extensively and build a comprehensive and systematic knowledge structure, but also strive for perfection by mastering specialty skills. You should also broaden your horizon, focus on the world, and enhance your ability and level of international cooperation. You should read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles. You should be pragmatic, pay attention to train yourself in the society, constantly improve the use of specialty knowledge to solve practical problems, to achieve the unity of knowledge and practice.”

Sun Aiwu remarked that, “you should have ideals in your heart, responsibilities on your shoulders and strength at your feet.” Students should adhere to the HYIT school motto of “study for the rise of China”, cultivate the HYIT spirit of “Pursuing moral excellence and great learning, constantly striving for self-improvement”, and become HYIT members of the new era with Zhou Enlai spirit of patriotism and dedication, the spirit of devotion and collaboration, the spirit of innovation in pursuit of excellence, and the spirit of craftsmanship in striving for perfection.
