In 2020, the enrollment of Huaiyin Institute of Technology reached another high record, with 946 new graduates receiving offers for further study, and the rate of the second batch of undergraduates going abroad for further study exceeds 24%. Among them, many students have been admitted by first-class universities such as Nanjing University, Wuhan University, University of Science and Technology of China and Harbin Institute of Technology, as well as well-known overseas universities such as University of Sydney, University of Queensland (Australia), University of Sheffield, King’s College London and University of Leeds (UK). In the meantime, there also emerged quite a number of typically outstanding groups for Postgraduate Entrance Examination (PEE) such as “ace dormitories” for PEE, Jiang Qingsong’s “hard core 1+4” research team from Faculty of Electronic and Information Engineering, the “super team” headed by Zhou Guiliang from the Faculty of Transportation Engineering, the “straight-A student couple” from Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, “super-power class” from Faculty of Chemical Engineering and so on and so forth. The PEE rate for faculties of Pharmaceutical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering and some other disciplines exceeds 50% and the same rate of specialties like Traffic Engineering, Applied Physics, Mechanical Design, Manufacture and Automation, and Automation exceeds 40%. According to statistics, the rate of students going abroad for further study in HYIT has remained stable at above 20% for five consecutive years, which further demonstrates the effectiveness of school-running and talent-cultivating.
Such fruitful work of PEE results from HYIT’s solid promotion of constructing academic atmosphere for many years. Since 2016, HYIT has made continuous efforts to promote the work of PEE . It has intensified the publicity by compiling and printing as gifts the development records of students who succeeded in the examination, posting their posters, presenting their stories by new media, and etc., so as to strengthen students’ awareness of the examination. It has improved the environment for the PEE. Free air-conditioned self-study classrooms were set up on all the three campuses, and hot water service was provided to improve the management service quality of the examination. The guidance on the PEE is strengthened by inviting professional teachers and teachers in charge of students affairs to provide students with the information of their dream colleges and universities and with guidance on both specialty courses, interviews, adjustment and other services. Service for the PEE is intensified through “heart-warming” gestures and activities like “My Treat” , “Coolness in Summer and Warmth in Winter” and many other forms of care.
Yet, it is known that the work of the PEE is just a microcosm of the achievements made by HYIT in promoting the construction of academic atmosphere. In recent years, the school has made new achievements in strengthening the discipline and specialty foundation to promote the construction of academic atmosphere. It has achieved greatly in the “Integration of Disciplines and Specialties”, coordinated discipline construction project “246X”, and specialty construction project “2612”. At present, two specialties, Mechanical Design, Manufacture and Automation, Computer Science and Technology have been approved as the national first-class undergraduate specialty construction points. Eight specialties, including Chemical Engineering and Technology, Food Science and Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Communications Engineering, Transportation, Landscape Design, Industrial Engineering and Industrial Design, have been approved as first-class undergraduate specialty construction points in Jiangsu province. At the same time, 5 specialties, Mechanical Design, Manufacture and Automation, Food Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Communications Engineering have passed the programmatic accreditation of engineering education.
Moreover, HYIT endeavors to promote the construction of excellent academy through academic skills competitions. With Xiangyu College, School of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Taichuang College established, the institute has, by holding academic skills competitions, created good academic atmosphere which in turn helps students develop excellent learning habits, so as to improve their comprehensive quality. In the past three years, students have won 4,651 prizes at both the provincial level and the national level in competitions such as “Creating Youth”, “Challenge Cup”, “Internet+” , National College Students’ Mathematical Modeling and the like.
Over the years, HYIT has always adhered to the original aspirations of “cultivating talents for the Party and the country” , and penetrated the whole process of education with the the spirit of Zhou Enlai: “firm ideal and faith, seeking truth through facts, self-discipline and dedication”. To educate with the Zhou Enlai spirit and construct the pattern of educating by all people, through all process and in directions, good academic atmosphere has been formed and the “Top Students Cultivation” plan has been implemented, which becomes a “booster” of the high-quality development of the school.
